What is Glaucoma

Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the nerve connecting the eye to the brain is damaged due to buildup of pressure in the eyes. This nerve is called the optic nerve and it conducts signals from the eyes to the brain. When it gets damaged, the brain no longer receive signals from the eyes anymore and hence sight is lost permanently.

Unfortunately, glaucoma can develop in anyone as long the pressure in the optic nerve starts getting high. It is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60 but can occur at any age.

Glaucoma is a very serious eye disease and in which treatment delay is not an option. If you start experiencing the signs listed below, consider visiting a doctor.

Some forms of glaucoma have no warning signs and their effect is so gradual that you may never notice a change in your sight until the condition is at an advanced stage.

Severe Headache

There are many causes of severe headache from relatively minor health problems like flu to serious health problems like malaria. However, if the headache becomes more intense on one side of the eye coupled with eye pain on that side too, there is a chance that pressure is building up in the eyes. You should visit a doctor.

Halos Around Lights

When you start seeing halos around lights or rainbow colours whenever you are close to lights either too bright or normal it might be time you visit a doctor and get checked for glaucoma.

Eye Redness

Eye redness is one most common signs of glaucoma though a person can have red eyes due to other conditions not linked to glaucoma. To be sure about this sign you must check whether you are also experiencing other glaucoma signs.

A combination of seeing halos around lights, together with eye pain and eye redness, then you must see a doctor.
