Mother And Aunt Allegedly Beat Child To Death

26-year old Vimbiso Muzvagwa from Budiriro assaulted her 11-year-old girl to death three days ago using a cooking stick and a sandal. She was allegedly helped by her younger sister Florence Nyasha Muzvagwa, 23.

The two sisters are facing murder charges for fatally assaulting the Vimbiso’s daughter Ropafadzo Muzvagwa.

Vimbiso, a security guard, reportedly forced the now deceased to lie down as she beat her for misbehaving.

It is alleged that the now deceased minor was living with her maternal grandmother in Beatrice since her mother and father divorced. The minor started demanding to go and live with her father, which resulted in Vimbiso sending her younger sister, Florence, to fetch the now deceased from Beatrice.

On the 23rd of October 2021, around 3pm, the deceased and the accused had a misunderstanding. Ropafadzo was requesting her mother to let her go and stay with her father Roy Chikoore as she claimed she would live better with her father than with her mother.

Vimbiso then allegedly beat her child with a cooking stick on the buttocks until the cooking stick broke into two pieces. She then made a call to the child’s father asking him to come and collect his child as the child wished. Sadly the father never came.

The following day, the 24th day of October 2021, at around 2pm, the suspect and the now deceased had another misunderstanding which prompted the minor to reiterate her desire to go and stay with her father. Again, this did not go down well with Vimbiso, who then picked up a thick leather sandal made up of a tyre sole and instructed her to lie down. That was the last time she was going to tell her that, however she didn’t know that as she heavily assaulted her 11 year old daughter on both legs and buttocks with the thick rubber sandal.

One neighbor called early to the scene said, "Haaa mashura chaiwo mwana akarohwa. Ini pandakasheedzwa ndakasvika akaita kuzvimba muviri wese." ["Its shocking how the child was beaten. When I arrived, she was swollen all over the body."]

Another neighbor commented: "It was too bad. Mwana akarohwa for more than two hours ndikabvinza vakati regai ane muskanzwa asi ihh it was too much." [ The child was assaulted for more than two hours and when I tried to intervene I was told she deserve it because is troublesome."]

After the beating, Ropafadzo was then ordered to do household chores before Vimbiso left for work at around 4:30pm.

Sometime around 8pm Vimbiso received a call from Florence telling her that Ropafadzo had collapsed. She got back home as quick as she could.

She arrived home at around 9pm and quickly noticed that her daughter was lying on the bed motionless. She attempted some futile first aid by rubbing salt on her neck, armpits, hands and stomach. It was too late.

The child’s father Roy Chikoore told H-Metro that he last spoke to his daughter some hours before the assault on Vimbiso’s phone.

"I separated with Vimbiso sometime in 2012 and got married to another wife," said Chikoore.

"On the fateful day she phoned me complaining about how she was being physically abused by her mother.

"Akanditi mukanonoka kuuya kuzonditora munowana ndaurayiwa namhamha nekurohwa handichadi kugara navo. ["She told me to come and pick her up before she is killed."]

"I promised to come and pick her this Wednesday but hey it’s painful.

"They have killed my daughter," said Chikoore.

Her body was taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital for post-mortem.

In Zimbabwe, corporal punishment for disciplinary purposes was banned in schools although parents still use it as a corrective measure.
