Is Lecturing An Effective Teaching Method?

Today we are going to look at the effectiveness of a very popular teaching method that is called lecturing. Lecturing is one of several teaching methods in schools and is usually considered as the most comprehensively used teaching method in most educational institutions at all levels.

Lecturing or lecture method is a teaching method in which the teacher imparts information to the students in form of lesson plans and academic concepts within the classroom setting.

Why the lecture method is convenient for most public institutions

The lecture method is generally a convenient and cost effective method for public institutions with larger classroom sizes. Lecturing is the standard approach for most college courses, where there is usually several hundred students in the classroom at once. The professor address the most people at once, conveying the information according to the lesson plan and the students absorb it through passive learning.

While the lecture method is convinient for large-class communication, it can create a learning experience that is boring and one-dimensional. To prevent that, the lecturer should make a constant and conscious effort to become aware of student problems and engage the students to give verbal feedback.

Quality of the lecture

The lecturer must have effective writing and speaking skills and must make use of various types of learning materials and instructional strategies to improve the quality of the lecture delivery.

Lesson preparation is another important factor that determines the quality of the lecture. The lecturer should be prepared enough to able to clarify the doubts and provide answers to the questions wil be put forward by the students.

Just like any other teaching method, the lecture method has its own advantages as wells as disadvantages.

Advantages of the lecture method

  • Allows the lecturer to present material that is not otherwise available to students.
  • Lecturers can present large amounts of information to a larger audiences.
  • Allows the lecturer maximum control of the learning experience.
  • Lecture appeal to passive learners who learn by listening.

Disadvantages of the lecture method

  • If not properly managed, lectures will fail to provide lecturers with feedback about the progress and extent of student learning.
  • The passive nature of lectures means that students are often passive and not intellectually engaged with the material.
  • If students are passive, their attention wanes quickly.
  • Information tends to be forgotten quickly when students are passive.
  • Lectures force all students to learn at the same pace as if they are at the same level of understanding.
  • Lectures requires a lecturer with effective speaking and presentation skills.
