Types of atomic bonds

There are three different types of bonds that can be formed when atoms combine. A chemical bond is typically classified as one being either:

  • Purely covalent bond – The type of bonding in which the bonding electrons are shared equally between the two bonding atoms.
  • Polar covalent bond – The type of bonding in which the electrons are shared between the two bonding atoms, but unequally, with the electrons being closer to the most electronegative atom.
  • Ionic bond -The type of bonding in which the electrons aren’t shared but are transfered to the more electronegative atom of the two bonding atoms, giving the more electronegative atom a negative charge and the other atom a positive charge. The strength of an ionic bond is in the attraction of the opposite charges.

Determine the type of bond

The type of bond between bonded atoms can be determined by looking at the difference in electronegativity between the two atoms.

  • If the difference in electronegativity values of the two atoms is 0, the bond is pure covalent.
  • If the difference in electronegativity values of the two atoms is between 0 and 2, the bond is polar covalent.
  • If the difference in electronegativity values of the two atoms is greater than 2, the bond is ionic.
