The Machaya Family Arrested For Marrying Off Another Minor
The Machaya family arrested for marrying off another child. The family has of late been in the news for the wrong reasons after Memory Machaya, a 14-year-old child bride died at a Johanne Marange Apostolic sect shrine in Bocha while giving birth.
According to Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Minister Sithembiso Nyoni the Machaya family has been arrested for alleged giving offering Memory’s 9 year old sister to the husband as a replacement.
Nyoni said this during a question and answer session in the National Assembly while responding to Mutare Central MP, Innocent Gonese (MDC Alliance) who wanted to know what the Government was doing to prevent child marriages.
“I want to assure you that Government is very concerned about child marriages. There is the Marriage Amendment Bill that is very strong on the prevention of child marriages”, said Minister Nyoni.
“I am happy that police have arrested some of the culprits including the family that had already given the man another child as a wife.”
Minister Sithembiso Nyoni said investigations into the issue were already at an advanced stage.
Memory Machaya is a 14-year old girl who had been forced out of school and married off to one Evans Momberume, a Johanne Marange sect Member. She died on 15 July while giving birth and was secretly buried two hours later by the church.
It is reported that her family then offered her 9-year old sister to Evans as a replacement.
More reports on the issue indicate that Momberume was arrested on Wednesday for having s_x with a minor and is set to appear at the Mutare Magistrates Court on Thursday.
We hope justice prevails.
