Chinese National Under Investigation For Marrying Underage Zimbabwean Girl
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a case where a family married off their 15-year-old daughter to a Chinese national, forcing the girl to drop out of school.
The 15-year-old girl (name withheld), is from Ward 5, Chief Neuso in Sanyati district, Mashonaland West province.
Reports suggest that the Chinese national paid US$2 000 to the girl’s parents as bride price on 26 November this year. The Chinese national is an engineer at Ringxin/Mambo Mine.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident to NewsDay:
"As police, I can confirm that we have launched an investigation into the case. For now, we can’t comment any further despite the fact that we are still conducting investigations."
Police in Sanyati on Wednesday rescued the girl. According to NewsDay, there are reports that the Chinese nationals working at mines near Kadoma target young girls, mostly virgins, for marriage. They are targeting impoverished families in the gold-rich area.
As one Tichaona Mapara told Newsday, the problem is being fuelled by poverty among families that live in the gold-rich area.
"Several parents of unmarried virgin girls are also eyeing these Chinese men to marry off their young girls in early forced marriages," Mapara told NewsDay.
Areas such as Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West are the
worst affected by child marriages.
